P.A. Ukrainians celebrate Christmas Day

Jan 7, 2017 | 11:00 AM

The holiday season isn’t over yet.

Prince Albert’s many Ukrainian’s are celebrating Christmas Day today, Jan. 7. It’s a festive time marked by elaborate meals and theatrics.

Natalia Antoniuk, who arrived in Canada from the Ukraine three years ago, said this is one of her favourite times of the year because of the carolling she gets to partake in.

“It brings me back to my home in Ukraine and it reminds me of all the good times I’ve had,” she said.

Ukrainian carolling, called vertep, is a little more elaborate than traditional North American carolling. While they still travel door-to-door singing, there’s an extra level of theatrics involved including costumes and playing pranks on one another.

Antoniuk and her friends and family could be seen carolling on Ukrainian Christmas Eve, Jan. 6.

After carollers worked up an appetite, they enjoyed a traditional 12 dish meal as part of the holiday celebration.
