Weather warnings cancelled, cold air to linger through weekend

Jan 6, 2017 | 1:00 PM

An extreme cold weather warning for Prince Albert was lifted Friday morning.  The warnings are issued when temperatures are expected to hit -40 C. As of about 7:30 a.m., Environment Canada was calling for a low Friday of -36C with wind chill.

Warnings were also cancelled throughout central and southeast Saskatchewan.

Environment Canada meteorologist Justin Shaer explained that cloud cover didn’t clear as quickly as expected Friday morning, keeping temperatures just above the cutoff for a warning.

He said the Arctic air that has caused cold temperatures throughout the week hasn’t gone anywhere, and wind chill will likely drive temperatures back below the -40C mark once the clouds dissipate.

“Overall, we are getting a clearing trend. So again tonight, or even later this afternoon you may see some warnings get re-issued,” he said.

Shaer said he expects the cold to affect areas as far as Carlyle, Sask. in the Southeast and possibly up to Prince Albert, as well as Saskatoon.

“We’ll see extreme cold warnings on and off for the weekend. Its just cold air sitting over the province,” he said.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.
