New team takes the reins of CKBI

Jan 3, 2017 | 5:27 AM

After decades under the watchful eye and ear of host Neil Headrick, a new team is taking to the airwaves of 900 CKBI.

The duo of Chris Knight and Teena Monteleone kicks off today, Jan. 3. It will be the first time a duo has hosted the morning show.

Speaking to the fans of Headrick and soon-to-be-retired Region at Noon host Don Mitchell, they said they’re going to honour the legacy of the former hosts by not mimicking them and are working with a blank slate to build their show in fresh new directions.

“It’s going to be tighter, faster (and) it’s going to move along your morning, but at the same time you’re going to get the information you need to go about your day,” Monteleone said.

“It’s going to be a lot more fresh and fun,” Knight said. “There may be a kazoo involved.”

Much of the job will be new to both hosts. Knight’s involvement with radio stretches back 11 years but he’s new to the area, while Monteleone has lived in Prince Albert for 13 years but hasn’t been on the radio since her broadcast internship at a Kamloops station in 2001.

This will be the second time Monteleone has filled the shoes of Don Mitchell. She replaced him as CTV Prince Albert’s news director in 2006, right before Mitchell joined the CKBI team.

“He says I’m a stalker,” Monteleone said of Mitchell.

Monteleone and Knight said their varied experience in broadcasting will create an interesting and continually developing dynamic.

Built around the slogan ‘news you can use,’ Knight said they’ll boost their social media and caller interaction, and include more games and contests into their show.

“We’re going to have more flexibility to be out in the public, more flexibility to have different angles of approach when it comes to different topics,” Knight said.
