Seasonal shelter running at near full capacity

Dec 9, 2016 | 11:37 AM

Freezing temperatures have just begun, and Prince Albert’s Cold Weather Cot Program is already expected to be packed.

The program at the YWCA Our House Shelter provides 10 beds, breakfast and a shower to those seeking refuge from the cold. It is also geared towards getting intoxicated people off of the streets. Our House Manager, Edna Bruce, said the cold cot program is essential.

“We have people that use it almost every night. They desperately need a place to live,” she said. “I expect we will be full or close to full most nights.”

Bruce said some of the people who use the shelter are from northern communities like Pelican Narrows and La Loche who find themselves stranded during the winter months.

The seasonal shelter was launched in 2013 following the freezing deaths of four people the year before. Bruce said she was surprised she hadn’t had to turn anyone away yet, adding some people either found their shelter for the winter or made their own choices.

“Sometimes there are people who choose to be out on the street,” Bruce added. “They just can’t deal with some of the rules.”

Bruce asked citizens not to turn a blind eye to those out in the cold. She encouraged people to keep extra gloves and toques in their cars, and offer them to anyone who looks cold.
