Online shopping keeps Canada Post busy

Dec 6, 2016 | 11:00 AM

It appears more people in Saskatchewan are shopping online.

Canada Post expects to deliver 235,000 parcels in the province this month, almost a 15 percent increase over last year.

Canada Post spokesperson, Aurelie Walsh said, in Prince Albert, roughly 12,000 parcels will be delivered. She attributed this number to the growing e-commerce industry across the country.

“This year, we’re anticipating that we’ll deliver 40 million parcels over the holiday season,” Walsh said.

Four years ago, Canada Post broke a record when one million packages were delivered in one day. To put that figure in perspective, Walsh estimated, this year, nearly 26 days of one million parcel deliveries.

“The big kick off to the holiday season is Cyber Week. We’ll start to see those huge volumes of deliveries around Dec. 12 when we anticipate delivering 3,500 parcels every minute,” Walsh said.

“There is only one person that delivers more packages than Canada Post…and that’s Santa Clause!”

As package deliveries increase in the coming weeks, so does the seasonal risk of package theft as many parcels are left on doorsteps. Online shoppers are encouraged to read the retailer’s shipping policy before they buy. Walsh said customers can usually choose to have their mail delivered straight to a post office for pick up. Requesting a signature upon delivery could also help prevent package theft.
