Toppers hold volleyball tryouts

Dec 5, 2016 | 6:08 AM

Some of the best volleyball players in the Prince Albert, Melfort and area are hoping to make the cut.

Tryouts were held Sunday at Carlton comprehensive high school for this year’s Toppers teams.

Over 150 girls tried out, and more than 20 will get told they did not make the team.

Nancy Wagar is head coach of the U17 En Fuego girls. She said the selection process is very tough.

“A lot of these girls I’ve coached over the years, you know moving up with, and some of them you just don’t have a spot for them,” she said.

Chandelle Cameron travelled to Prince Albert from Duck Lake to try out for the U17 squad. She said playing for the Toppers is quite a different experience than playing high school volleyball.

“My school isn’t very competitive, it’s more like anyone can play so this is, like, a big change,” she said.

Jaedyn Rudichuk is hoping to make either the U15 or U16 squad. She said the thought of being a Topper is very appealing.

“They all kind of work together and everyone knows everyone, it’s just a good environment,” she said.

The team rosters will be posted on the Toppers’ website later today.
