Pats pepper Raiders early in 12-2 win

The Regina Pats wasted little time getting the upper hand on a Raider team facing the number one squad in the CHL while playing its fourth game in five nights.

Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Adam Brooks extended his consecutive game point streak to 18 with his 10th goal of the season just 1:03 into the game while four minutes later Dawson Leedahl would finish a three way passing play with a low snap shot from close range.

Rykr Cole would score on a sharp angle shot beating Nick Sanders on the short side, after which he was replaced by Ian Scott.

The Raiders replied late in the opening frame as Simon Stransky ripped a quick wrist shot into the top corner after Austin Glover won the face off at 17:37, but with 1.3 seconds left in the opening period, Sergey Zborovskiy scored from close range at the end of a long pressure packed shift and the Pats led 4-1 after one period.

It was more of the same in the second period as Ian Scott faced a 22 shot barrage and the Pats extended the lead to 8-1 on goals by Riley Woods, Brett Henry, Connor Hobbs and Zborovskiy.  The Raiders best chance to score in the middle frame came on a Cole Fonstad chance from the right wing circle on an odd man rush but he was stopped by the trapper of Pats veteran goalie Tyler Brown.

The onslaught continued as Brooks scored again less than a minute into the third period. Brooks would finish the night with two goals and three assists. Back to back goals by Austin Wagner ended Ian Scott’s evening as Sanders went back between the pipes and surrendered the final goal of the night at 19:43 of the third period. Zborovskiy was the offensive star of the evening with two goals, five assists and a plus-8 rating.

Austin Glover sniped the other Raider goal, an unassisted power play marker in the third period. Glover and Stransky also scored during Saturday’s win over Moose Jaw.

Associate coach Dave Manson told the 900 CKBI post game show audience playing their fourth game in five nights beginning Tuesday night in Medicine Hat took its toll against the top ranked team in the CHL who had been resting for a week.

Manson also said the lopsided nature of the game allowed the coaching staff to play younger players in all situations hoping that experience will pay dividends later in the season.

The Pats who scored four goals in each period outshot the Raiders 47-16. Scott stopped 20 of the 27 shots he faced while Sanders made 15 saves on 20 shots.

The Raiders will have two days rest before hosting former teammate Matteo Gennero and the Calgary Hitmen on Tuesday.

All Raider games can be heard on 900 CKBI.
