Fentanyl could reach P.A. depending on distribution patterns: expert
Despite low numbers, one expert says we could see more fentanyl on P.A. streets, depending on the distribution patterns of the drug and the response by law enforcement.
Fentanyl was responsible for 22 deaths in Saskatchewan in 2015, but only one of these occurred in P.A. In that incident the drug was sold as OxyContin, a commonly-abused painkiller.
Health region spokesperson Dori Gaudet said P.A. health experts have been watching out for fentanyl and instituting preventative measures such as the take-home Naloxone program, but fentanyl in P.A. is overshadowed by more pressing concerns.
“The drugs that are causing the most issue for us here in Prince Albert are alcohol and crystal meth,” Gaudet said.
