Oct 20, 2010 | 11:49 AM

A First Nations woman who was born in Prince Albert will receive the province's top honor.

Myrna Yuzicappi is one of seven people named to receive the order of merit.

The Order of Merit recognizes individuals who have contributed significantly to the wellbeing of the province and its residents.

Yuzicappi is a member of the Okanese First Nation.

She is the founding director of the Saskatoon Native Survival School — later named Joe Duquette High School and then Oskayak High School.

She also served as a member of the Indian and Métis Curriculum Advisory Committee.

Yuzicappi now acts as a Special Advisor to SIAST in Saskatoon on Aboriginal Initiatives.

In 1997, she was named educator of the year in aboriginal education by the Saskatoon Pre-school Foundation Awards.

The Order of Merit will be handed out in Regina, Nov. 23.

Other recipients include Donald Kramer, Janice MacKinnon, and Douglas Schmeiser.
