Diehl’s Haunted Halls brings family fun to Halloween weekend

Oct 29, 2016 | 12:00 PM

Screams and shouts of fright will echo through the gymnasium of the Senator Allan Bird Memorial Centre over the weekend.

Portions of the gymnasium have been turned into a spooky maze for those who think they’re brave enough to handle the Diehl family’s Haunted Halls. It was previously hosted at the exhibition grounds.

Robin Gyoerick, an organizer from the Diehl family, said they’d received lots of positive feedback from their neighbours when they had their own haunted house.

“We’d thought about doing it out at the house again, and then it snowed early,” Gyoerick said. “Korey Diehl approached us, and asked if we wanted to try doing it here.”

Gyoerick said the event is better indoors because it provides shelter from the elements. Being at the Senator Allan Bird Memorial Centre also saves her some set up time and allows for fresh scares.

“We were able to use what was here already,” Gyoerick said. “Just using the hallways and the creepy aspect of whatever was around in the building and turning it a bit to make it a little scarier.”

There will also be entertainment for the younger crowd according to Korey Diehl, one of the organizers.

“For the little guys there’s a lighter haunted house. It’s just a smaller version of what we have, but no scary things popping out of corners or demons flying around or anything like that,” Diehl said.

Half of admission proceeds will go to the Prince Albert Grand Council’s youth summer program. The other half will go to the World Vision charity. Non-perishable food donations are also being accepted at the door and go to the food bank.

Diehl’s Haunted Halls will run all weekend, starting at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday  until midnight, and on Halloween Monday the halls will be open until 11 p.m.
