Green projects proposed for R.M. of Paddockwood

Oct 25, 2016 | 12:00 PM

One of two men running for reeve in the rural municipality of Paddockwood is offering a different way to raise revenue in the R.M.

If elected, Bryan Lee said he wants to explore a wind or solar generation project.

“Within five years, a smaller facility like one megawatt of power would be enough to enable us the R.M. to lower our taxes by some 20 per cent,” Lee said.

Lee’s campaign promise falls in with the provincial government’s goal to double Sask Power’s solar, wind and hydro electrical systems by 2030.

When asked who would pay for the construction and start-up costs, Lee said the onus on the R.M. would be kept to a minimum.

He said the costs to pay for the project would come mostly from federal and provincial grants.

“Once it’s paid off, a fair amount of revenue could be generated, we’re thinking in the area of $300,000 to $400,000 a year,” Lee said.

Lee said seniors who live in the R.M. are in need of assistance as they are the ones who are feeling the biggest brunt of tax increases, living on fixed incomes.

“And property values are ever increasing whereas before a starter home would be $20,000 and now you’re looking at $150,000,” he said.

Lee, who is retired, is running against incumbent Lance Fehr.

paNOW has attempted multiple times in the past week to get a comment from Fehr, but calls were not returned.

In addition to the reeve position, there are two councillor positions. Here are the candidates running in each division:

Division 1: Steven Mitchell and Garry Sumlic

Division 3: Lionel Lavoie (acclaimed)

Division 5: Tom McKnight, Paul Paquette, Roy Stanofsky

Division 6: Louise Corriveau (acclaimed)
