Final advance poll closes ahead of city election

Oct 23, 2016 | 8:36 AM

With Prince Albert’s municipal election only a few days away, the final advance poll has closed.

The poll station at City Hall already had a small line up only a half hour after it opened at 1 p.m. on Oct. 22.

According to many voters paNOW spoke to, the candidates’ attitude towards city infrastructure was their first concern and the deciding factor in who they voted for.

Leilani Hanson said whether the candidate agreed to having a second bridge was her number one determinant.

Earl Ermine, who considered himself semi-retired, said “the streets are certainly a factor.”

Isabelle Impey agreed and said the back alleys need to be fixed because they’re “so bad.”

Taxes, water safety and accessibility for seniors were also major concerns for those who turned out for the advance poll on Saturday.

Overall they said it was an easy and efficient system and said they were glad they received the chance to vote.

Another citizen Earl Ermine who called himself semi-retired, agreed “the streets are certainly a factor.”

Other citizens’ concerns included water, safety and taxation.

After only two days of voting, 496 people had cast their ballot. In the 2012 election a total of 739 people voted in advance polls.

However, in 2012 only those who hit a very specific criteria could vote in advance polls, such as being away on election day.

This year any voter can make their decision at an advance poll.

It’s unknown at this time if it will have any effect on voter turnout on election day, which is Wednesday, Oct. 26.
