Fire Prevention Week brings mock accident to Muskoday

Oct 13, 2016 | 5:00 PM

During National Fire Prevention week, the Muskoday First Nation fire department is busy raising awareness around the community.

A mock accident scene was set up in front of the Muskoday Community School, where students could witness a victim extraction which allowed the department’s rookies to get some practise.

“We thought we’d come and do a demonstration to show the kids how the jaws (of life) work, and what we’d have to do to get a victim out,” Randy Bair said.

Bair, the captain of the Muskoday Fire Department, said his department spent prevention week running drills throughout the community.

“The kids are getting pretty good. They’re getting it down pat, what we have to do (in the event of a fire),” Bair said. “We’re trying to get a junior firefighter group going here with some of the Grade 8 and 9 students, just to build them in.”

According to Bair, the department is very active in the community. A monthly fire drill is performed at the school, and students even take part in a search and rescue operation within the building. The department also checks on the smoke alarms in the band office and health center to make sure everything is in order.

To wrap up Fire Prevention Week, Bair said the department will be doing “learn not to burn” presentations to students from kindergarten to Grade 9.

Bair passed along a few words of advice for residents in Muskoday about fire prevention.

“Be careful. We strive on going around doing house inspections. Every house on the reserve, we check their smoke detectors to make sure they’re still functional. We check most things in the house… make sure they know their escape plans and all that,” he said.
