A convicted murderer is on the loose after escaping from Saskatchewan Penitentiary near Prince Albert.

Roger Joseph Gillet was discovered to be missing by prison staff at the 10 a.m. count Friday morning.

The 64-year-old was serving an indeterminate sentence for second degree murder, forcible confinement, robbery, prison breach and escape of lawful custody.

He was being held in the penitentiary minimum security unit.

The Correctional Service of Canada is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the escape and are coordinating with Prince Albert police and the RCMP to locate Gillet.

Gillet is described as 5’7″, 179 lbs with a fair complexion, brown eyes and grey hair. He has scars on his back and chin and tattoos on the abdomen, chin, upper right arm and left arm.

Saskatchewan has seen more prisoner escapes this year than it has over the past five years.
