BOSTON — An Army veteran who was shot and killed during a confrontation in Boston’s Theater District was remembered by family members as a “loyal son, brother and friend” at the sentencing for the man convicted of the slaying.

Peter Castillo, of Salem, was sentenced Monday to a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole for the April 2012 shooting death of Stephen Perez, of Revere. The 28-year-old Castillo was convicted of first-degree murder last week.

Perez’s sisters Amanda Prouty O’Sullivan and Rebecca Prouty say their brother “touched the lives of anyone lucky enough to be around him.”

Prosecutors say Castillo shot the 22-year-old Perez, who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan, in the back.
