Community pantries hoped to help P.A.’s hungry

Learning Prince Albert’s Food Bank was in dire need of food, sparked an idea which has led to the creation of five community pantries in the city.

Brittany Nicolas and her family and friends spent Sunday, Sept. 25 assembling the cabinets. Once the boxes have been put up in various locations around town, they’ll hopefully be filled with food for those who can’t afford their own.

“There’s lots of need in our community, there’s lots of homelessness, there’s lots of food insecurity. I think this will be a good project to combat those,” Nicolas said.

Though the idea for the community pantry boxes was sparked by the P.A. Food Bank, Nicolas said it’s completely community driven and no organizations are involved.

“It’s not regulated and that’s the whole purpose of it, so people don’t feel judged by taking food when they need it,” she said. “The whole point is we hope people will take food when they need it and people will leave food when they don’t.”

In the winter, when most food will freeze in the community pantry, Nicolas said they’ll leave winter wear such as mitts and scarves to help keep people warm.

The community boxes will be placed at the YWCA, Our House, Calvary United Church, the Bernice Sayese Centre and River Park Memorial Funeral Chapel.

Nicolas said they’ve reached out to the city to place more community pantries on public property.
