Harvest progress improves despite wet conditions

Sep 2, 2016 | 12:00 PM

Dryer weather in the south in recent days has improved harvest progress across the province, bringing 2016 in line with the five-year average. Despite the wet conditions, producers in the Prince Albert region are still making gains.

So far, eight per cent of the 2016 crop is in the bin regionally, while another 39 per cent is swathed and ready to cut. Significant rainfall in August caused some flooding and soft fields in some areas. Some equipment has been getting stuck as a result of the soft conditions.

Cropland topsoil moisture is rated at 72 per cent adequate for the P.A. district. While hayland and pasture topsoil moisture is in a similar condition, at 73 per cent adequate.

Crop reporters estimate eight per cent of forage acres in the district will not be harvested due to the wet season. With harvest already underway, there is little time to finish haying.
