‘Mighty’ Moe looks to skate his way onto Raiders

Aug 26, 2016 | 7:00 PM

In terms of height, Spencer Moe is one of the smallest players currently at the Prince Albert Raiders rookie camp.

The 16-year-old forward is listed at 5’6.5”, with the only Raiders at rookie camp that are shorter are Gavin Ingram and the pint-size Prince Albert product Owen Ozar at 5’6”.

He may be tiny, but Moe’s potential is unmeasurable.

He’s short but stout, and uses his low centre of gravity and explosive speed to weave through defences. In rookie camp scrimmages, Moe also showed the ability to initiate contact.

He believes that will be crucial in his bid to make the Raiders in his first year of WHL full-season eligibility.

“Oh for sure. I’ve got the strength and power to be able to play in this league,” Moe said. “I may be one of the smallest guys, but I have a lot of grit in me. I believe I can show that really well in the league.”

Although he’s zipping around the ice like a cat chasing a laser pen, it’s been a challenge for him to get back to his peak shape.

Not long after Moe was called up to the Raiders March 4 against the Kootenay, he had surgery in his left calf to correct a condition of osteochondroma, a benign bone tumour. He needed to rehab it throughout the offseason but said he feels like a million bucks now in time for rookie camp.

“I’m feeling like a brand new me, really,” Moe said. “It would mean a lot to me [to make the team]. I’ve kind of been through a lot right now. All the work I’ve done this summer and year-long is basically just for this. I’m hoping to get a spot this year.”

Moe had 23 points in 28 games with the Calgary Buffaloes in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League last year, after being drafted in the second round by the Raiders in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft. Moe had three more points in two playoff games. He also won the Western Canada Under-16 Challenge Cup with Team Alberta.

He also made his WHL debut on March 4 against the Kootenay Ice, coming inches away from scoring his first major junior goal from just in front of the Ice’s goal.

“That was embarrassing, I got chirped a little by the teammates there,” Moe said as his face reddened but took the whole thing in stride. “Oh well, I guess I’ll try and get one this year or something.”

The Raiders will continue with scrimmages from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre on Friday.
