Aug 26, 2016 | 2:30 PM

The Prince Albert Catholic School Division is celebrating 130 years of faith and education this year.

On Friday, division board chair, George Bolduc, welcomed staff, parents and Minister of Education Don Morgan to St. Mary’s High School to commemorate the occasion and reflect on the achievements of the board and its students over 13 decades of Catholic education.

Lorel Trumier, director of education for the division, said the first 130 years were about establishing and promoting education and faith in Prince Albert, while the next 130 will be about moving forward and building on past successes.

“I think the goal for the next 130 years is to continue to do what we do well,” she said. “Embrace faith and learning and respond to our children and our families in the Prince Albert Catholic areas.”

Morgan presented a plaque to board chair Bolduc to mark the milestone and reflected on the rarity of such an anniversary.

“I’ve had the privilege of celebrating many school and school division anniversaries across the province,” Morgan said to the nearly 300 in attendance. “I want to say it’s a rare occasion to celebrate one that predates the province’s own birthday.”

Trumier went on to highlight some of the work staff and students across the school division took up outside the classroom over the last year. A highlight Included a wide range of social justice initiatives such as welcoming resettled Syrian refugees to P.A. and their commitment to providing the gift of service to others.

As for initiatives for this upcoming school year, Trumier said staff is already hard at work developing projects and ideas. Staff members are expected to permeate faith throughout the curriculum and show their students how to care for others.

Some of those ideas will be developed in coordination with students as a way to show the community they are all constructive and engaged members of the community.

Roughly 3,200 students are currently enrolled in the P.A. Catholic School Division, which also employs more than 300 full time staff.
