Handy field work: Manitoba farmer has unusual marriage proposal for girlfriend

SELKIRK, Man. — A Manitoba farmer has harvested a “yes” to a marriage proposal he plowed into a field.

John Yokimas took his girlfriend, Sally Hnatiuk, for a plane ride.

While airborne they flew over his romantic question — “I Love U Sally. Will U Marry Me?” — written in a wheat field in big letters.

The East Selkirk farmer says Hnatiuk was in shock when she saw it, but immediately accepted.

“It was a little crowded in the plane,” Yokimas said Thursday. “It is a hard to get down on one knee.”

Shortly after he popped the question, Yokimas put an engagement ring on his fiancee’s finger.

“I thought the surprise was the plane ride, so to see he even had even more plans was amazing,” she said.

Hnatiuk said everyone knows her fiance as “Farmer John”, and he has always been romantic.

“If anyone says chivalry is dead, they haven’t met John,” she said. “It has been so overwhelming.”

Yokimas said he always wanted to propose by inscribing a message in his field.

He spent a month planning the big moment.

The couple are to marry in the fall of 2017. (CTV Winnipeg)
