TEENS IN NOVA SCOTIA COURT TO FACE CHARGES UNDER NEW LAW

Six teenaged boys are expected in a Nova Scotia court today to face the first charges in Canada under a new law designed to combat illegal online sharing of images. Police in Bridgewater say images of more than 20 teenaged girls were circulated after allegedly being shared without consent in a Dropbox account. Two 18-year-olds and four 15-year-olds — whose identities are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act — have been charged with both distributing intimate images without consent and possession and distribution of child pornography.

STUDY SUGGESTS INDIGENOUS PARENTS MORE FEARFUL OF SCHOOL

A study suggests the legacy of residential schools has left some indigenous people more wary and fearful of Canada’s current education system. The study, published in this month’s issue of the Canadian Review of Sociology, suggests that distrust leads parents to be less engaged with teachers and could hurt their children’s education. The article is based on interviews with dozens of educators and parents from southern Ontario. The majority were indigenous.

TERRORIST SYMPATHIZER FUNERAL PLANNED FOR THURSDAY

A funeral is expected to take place in London, Ont., on Thursday for a terrorist sympathizer killed in a high-stakes police standoff in a nearby community. But while the London Muslim Mosque is offering support to Aaron Driver’s family and advice on planning the service according to Islamic traditions, a spokesman says the ceremony will not be held at any Muslim institution in the city, nor will any local imam preside. Driver, 24, was killed by a gunshot last Wednesday in Strathroy, Ont., after making a martyrdom video that suggested he was planning to detonate a homemade bomb in an urban centre.

LIBERAL MP MAURIL BELANGER DEAD AT 61 

Longtime Liberal MP Mauril Belanger died Tuesday at the age of 61 following a highly public battle with ALS — also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Belanger represented the riding of Ottawa-Vanier since a byelection in February 1995, winning his eighth consecutive election in last fall’s federal election. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called Belanger a “tireless M-P and brave fighter.”

HIGH JUMPER DEREK DROUIN WINS OLYMPIC GOLD FOR CANADA

Canada’s Derek Drouin won the gold medal in the men’s high jump at the Rio Olympics on Tuesday. Drouin didn’t miss a single attempt en route to winning with a season-best jump of 2.38-metres. The reigning world champion from Corunna, Ontario, won medal number 14 for Canada, and the third for the track and field team here. Canada will be competing for gold again today in equestrian team jumping and the men’s 3,000-metre steeplechase.

EX-QUEBEC LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR TO BE RELEASED FROM JAIL TODAY

Former Quebec lieutenant-governor Lise Thibault will officially be granted full conditional release from jail today. The 77-year-old had already been given parole under certain conditions last June. She received the complete conditional release at a parole board meeting last week. Thibault pleaded guilty in December 2014 after a report by the federal and provincial auditors general revealed she claimed more than 700-thousand-dollars in improper expenses when she held the vice-regal post between 1997 and 2007.
