Culture Days coming to Prince Albert

Culture Days are coming to Prince Albert.

Marion Conway, with YWCA settlement services, addressed Monday’s executive committee meeting to request the support of city council in the lead up to the event.

“The purpose of Culture Days is to provide free, interactive, cultural opportunities that raise awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of Canadians in the arts and culture life of their communities,” Conway said.

Some of the events planned for the weekend include a cultural café at the Prince Albert Arts Centre on Sept. 30 and an urban art tour, with almost two dozen downtown businesses hosting local artists to demonstrate their work.

For Conway and the organizers of Culture Days, the event is about more than just shining a light on local culture. It’s a way to help bring the community together through art and understanding.

“This is an event that could help many of our newcomers, as well as current community members, feel connected to each other and the community,” Conway said.

The purpose of Conway’s presentation at the executive committee meeting was to request an official proclamation from the mayor’s office as well as request free bus service for Culture Days participation.

While a proclamation from the mayor is a relatively simple request, free transit for Culture Days is a big ask for the organizers. But Conway said both requests would do a lot to help get people out.

“We work with so many people that face an obstacle when it comes to transportation,” Conway said. “By having it free, they’d be able to participate in Culture Days. We want to make it a welcoming time for everyone.”

The two requests were referred to the department of public works and the mayor’s office for approval.
