P.A. residents stock up water in face of oil spill

Jul 23, 2016 | 4:06 PM

Prince Albert residents are taking the city’s warning to stock up on water to heart. Several P.A. stores are reporting a steep increase in the sale of water.

Management at the Real Canadian Superstore said they have seen such an increase, they are adding three large trailers of additional water overnight.

Ali Kirmani, assistant manager at Walmart, also reported a boost in sales.

“Actually, we have almost finished all the water today, we have a few left,” he said.

Kirmani said the store is working to keep on top of demand.

“We are prepared, tonight we are getting a whole truck of water coming in,” he said.

Some shops, not traditionally known for selling water have also seen an increase in sales.

Mavis Willis with Pharmasave said the shop is well equipped for added demand.

“We got a big shipment in so we have lots, we will be good and we have lots on hand,” she said.

The City of Prince Albert advised residents to stock up on water on July 22, as oil from the Husky Energy spill near Maidstone, Sask. crept closer to Prince Albert. Over 250,000 litres are estimated to have spilled.

City staff said the city’s Water Treatment Plant intake from the North Sask. River will shut down on Sunday, July 24 as a precautionary measure.

paNOW will have updates on the city’s plan to manage the spill as they come in.
