Small Sask. village ready to smash it

Jul 21, 2016 | 6:00 AM

This weekend a small Saskatchewan community of about 150 people will see a dramatic population increase.

The village of Parkside is hosting its 35th annual Demolition Derby on Saturday, July 23.

Jeff Ledding, president of the Parkside and District Community Club, said the annual event brings in between 1,000 to 1,200 people.

“It’s something the community looks forward to every year,” he said.

The event begins Saturday at 2 p.m. with the novelty race which will see participants racing around barrels.

The derby itself starts at 3 p.m.

“A bunch of guys fix up a bunch of old cars and they run them into each other and the last man standing wins,” Ledding said.

The weekend will also feature a mixed slo-pitch tournament on Friday and Saturday, ending with a dance and performance by Hedged on Saturday night.

Not only will it be a weekend of fun, but there is also a benefit to the community.

“We use it as a fundraiser and donate the money to such things as the hospital and improvements to the derby grounds, as well as donating money back to the community, for people who are sick,” Ledding said.

Gate admission is $10 for adults, kids aged six to 12 is $5, kids under six are free and a family pass is $25.

The dance will be $10 to attend.
