New name in the Ward 3 ring

Jul 1, 2016 | 8:10 AM

After hearing from friends she should run for city council, a Ward 3 business owner is putting her hat in the ring.

Pamela Helbig-Sukut has owned Hair and Beyond Salon for over 20 years and has considered running for city council for the last four.

She said taxes will be her number one priority.

“Small businesses and home owners (in Ward 3) are being stretched terribly to their limitations,” she said. “We need to entice larger business to our city to get a bigger tax base.”

As a business owner in Ward 3, Helbig-Sukut said she’s seen wasteful spending on city projects in her area.

“We should do infrastructure correctly the first time, not have to redo stuff like they see now,” she said, citing the extensive roadwork being done.

Having been involved in provincial and federal politics from the sidelines for some time, Helbig-Sukut said she decided it was the right time to run after being told her “head was in the right place” by friends.

“It’s easy enough to complain, so I thought I’d take a leap to help our community help itself.”

Helbig-Sukut is the first candidate to declare her intentions in Ward 3. Lee Atkinson is the current councillor.
