COUNCIL PREVIEW: P.A. tourism ordered to present quarterly budget

Jun 27, 2016 | 6:39 AM

Council will be paying close attention to the budgets of the group who brought the Borealis Music Festival to Prince Albert.

On Monday, June 27 city council will discuss over 25 agenda items, including funding for tourism and approving two new bylaws.

City staff is recommending council approve the third quarter budget for the Prince Albert Tourism and Marketing Bureau totalling $34,850.

The organization has been plagued with financial issues tracing back to the Borealis Music Festival. The event hemorrhaged roughly $82,000 and required a bailout from P.A. taxpayers. The tourism bureau now requires council approval for every quarterly budget they present.

City staff is recommending council approve a bylaw enforcing and establishing minimum standards of maintenance and repairs to buildings within the city. A similar bylaw will determine how properties in the city are maintained.

According to a report staff will present to council, the bylaw has undergone changes and will now pertain to aspects “directly related to the structure and occupancy” of a building in the city. Also, the city’s property amenities bylaw, similar to the one above, will be updated so each ruling can be enforced simultaneously.

A motion will be presented to council by Councillor Lee Atkinson recommending establishing John M. Cuelenaere Public Library as a municipal city library with the province. The library is currently classified as a public library.

The meeting will take place at 5 p.m. in council chambers at city hall.
