Prince Albert drivers behaving badly

Jun 23, 2016 | 3:28 PM

The results are in from this week’s traffic blitz in Prince Albert, and by no means will drivers in the city be getting a gold sticker for good behaviour.

Over the course of two days, police issued 293 tickets.

Some of the highlights of the blitz include 81 speeding tickets, 54 tickets for drivers not wearing a seatbelt and 23 drivers caught using some sort of electronic device while driving. Police also seized nine vehicles.

Prince Albert Police Staff Sgt. Dave Schluff said there was a case where a single driver received more than one ticket.

“During this blitz there was one driver that went through three stop checks and ended up getting a ticket each time. I think there was one cell phone (ticket) and two (for) seat belts,” he said.

Schluff said it’s amazing that with all the education out there, people still choose to break the law, especially since locals were informed about the blitz days before it happened.

“Our objective is not to write the ticket; our objective is to make sure our streets are safe and people are obeying traffic safety,” he said.

The statistics from the blitz will be shared with SGI and other police enforcement agencies across the province to help guide future traffic related policies.

The information could also be used to develop some new policies in Prince Albert.

“Maybe in time we’ll be looking at things like red light cameras or something like that but that’s not in the works right at this moment. In the future I could see it,” Schluff said.
