Dragons season ends with a silver lining

Jun 14, 2016 | 1:29 PM

The Sask River Dragons secured second place at the Northern High School Rugby tournament in Saskatoon last weekend.

The Prince Albert side advanced to the final with a heart stopping 17-15 win over the Springboks in the semi-final.

The Dragons jumped out to a 12-5 halftime lead on try’s by Tristen Franc and Kaleb Beauchesne and battled through and intense second half to seal the victory.

Ben Myo dove in for the Dragons lone second half try after a strong scrum pushed the ball to the goal line with about 10 minutes remaining, giving Sask River a seven point lead, which was reduced to just two points moments later.

The Dragons defense shut the door in the dying seconds as a Springbok ball carrier was tackled out of bounds just four metres short of the goal line on the final play of the game. The difference proved to be Garrett Simpson’s two point covert on the Dragons opening try.

Sask River ran into a big, fast and veteran side in the final, losing 39-0 to the Saskatoon All Blacks in the championship game on June 11.
