The city will get rid of your hazardous waste this weekend

Jun 9, 2016 | 2:11 PM

There may be a better solution for those old bottles of household cleaners collecting dust in the basement.

All household hazardous waste can be dropped off for free on Saturday, June 11 at the Old City yards (the corner of Sixth Ave. E. and 10th St. E.) between 9 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Sanitation Manager Dale Rankel encouraged residents to take advantage of this event.

“It’s free,” he said. “These are items we don’t want to see in the garbage and waste stream.”

Waste items could include anything from drain cleaner to florescent tubes, adhesives, aerosols, automotive batteries, corrosives, fuels, mercury oxidizers, paints, propane cylinders etc.

“We are not looking (to accept) anything that is unknown,” he said. “We can’t take it if we don’t know what it is.”

“At least if we have a story about it, we can accept it.”

After the event, residents can also drop their paints at the landfill any time.

The city warns that hazardous items are often toxic or flammable so extra care should be taken when disposing of them.

Rankel said this would be the second season and the city is trying to get people interested in attending the event.

“As it grows, we might look into the future of having two to three events in a year,” he said.
