Sask. sex offender to be released on parole

Jun 6, 2016 | 5:09 PM

A man convicted of sexual assault while working as a residential school supervisor is set to be released on parole.

Paul Leroux, 75, is serving a sentence of seven years, 10 months and 25 days after being found guilty on 10 counts of sexual abuse in 2013. The abuse happened when he was a dormitory supervisor at Beauval Residential School in the 1960s.

He has served a third of his sentence, making him eligible for parole.

Parole board spokesperson Patrick Storey said the board gave careful consideration to their decision, going over criminal histories, psychological assessments, sexual offender programming reports and victim statements, among others.

According to Storey, Leroux underwent mandatory correctional programs and is at a low risk to re-offend.

“He’s still under sentence, he’s just serving the sentence in the community. He’s under supervision, special conditions have been imposed on him and he has to abide by those conditions otherwise run the very serious risk of being returned to prison,” Storey said.

Leroux must avoid males under 18 unless accompanied by a responsible adult aware of his history and is not allowed to access any pornography.

He was previously sentenced to 10 years in 1998 for similar sexual assault charges while working at a residential school in the North West Territories.
