Preds’ coach baffled after Sunday’s loss to Riot

Darryl Frenette doesn’t know what more his Prince Albert Predators can do to get a win. The head coach was left shaking his head Sunday after his Predators were ousted 13-11 by the Regina Riot at the Kinsmen Arena.

Despite Frenette seeing significant progress in key areas, his team was saddled with their second loss in a week’s span. The Preds lost a 12-9 decision Wednesday at home to the Saskatoon S.W.A.T.

“I don’t know what to say. We tightened up our D, we improved our line changes—it’s just kind of frustrating,” said Frenette. “We’re getting so darn close, but we can’t seem to seal the deal.”

The difference of the game came in the second period, which has been the Predators’ Achilles’ heel this season.

The Predators had a 7-5 lead midway through the second period, but surrendered five straight goals and saw themselves down 10-7 heading into the third. Four of the Riot’s goals in that scoring run came within a four-minute period.

“The second period for us this season has been a tough period,” said Frenette. “We always seem to fall behind in the second period, and it’s tough to claw back.”

Sunday’s game was the last home game of the year for the Predators. They’ll wrap up their regular campaign on Wednesday in the Bridge City to take on the Saskatoon S.W.A.T.

The Preds are guaranteed a PGLL playoff spot, but they will not have home court advantage in either the June 11 semifinals, or the June 18 finals.

“We’ll be in the playoffs for sure, but we won’t be hosting a playoff game,” said Frenette. “That’s really disappointing because we would love to bring a playoff game back to the Kinsmen and treat our fans. It’s not to be this year.”

Predators captain Arliss McCloy potted two goals and an assist. Reid Corrigal had a goal and four assists while Jagg Carlson scored a goal and three assists.

Cole Welter led the Riot attack with a hat trick and two assists.
