New plan unveiled for weekend bridge traffic

Those visiting the lake this weekend can find some comfort knowing the trip home this Sunday, May 29 will be a lot less stressful.

Two southbound lanes on the Diefenbaker Bridge will be open on Sunday from 12 to 8 p.m.

The change was made following a series of meetings by city officials and representatives from the province regarding the traffic congestion that happened over the May long weekend.

Due to only one southbound lane being open on Monday, traffic was backed way up.  Some people returning home from the lake had two-hour waits to get across the bridge.

City Manager Jim Toye said moving forward there will be two lanes open during the busier flows of traffic.

For long weekends, the two lanes will be open on the final day of the weekend.

“When we change to the northbound side, we will change the traffic flows,” Toye said.

He added he does not anticipate any impact on the bridge restoration timeline.

The construction project is expected to be done in early September.
