Outbreak of caterpillars will subside in few weeks according to city staff

May 25, 2016 | 5:20 PM

Administrators at the City of Prince Albert are offering some comforting words to residents who may be feeling a bit on edge.

An outbreak of tent caterpillars is expected to subside over the next two weeks.

Many of the caterpillars are now moving on to the next cycle of their life, which is looking for an area to pupate. In few weeks, they will emerge as brown-coloured moths.

Parks Manager Bob Gill explains why there appears to be more this year than before.

“For most insects they have cycles and we’ve just kind of hit the peak of these Forest Tent Caterpillars right now,” he said

The City has no plans to spray.

“We always prefer, if we can, to let mother nature take its course for environmental issues or staffing or whatever. It’s just one thing after another so we just prefer the natural way,” Gill said.

Homeowners who wish to spray the trees are advised to apply Bacillus Thuringiensis (BT) as soon as damage to the leaves can be seen, since BT only works on feeding caterpillars.

This pesticide can be found at most local greenhouses.
