UPDATE: One man in custody after stolen taxi leads to police chase

May 2, 2016 | 6:40 AM

One man is now in custody after a taxi driver’s car was stolen during his coffee break around 5 a.m. today, May 2.

Sgt. Brandon Mudry said police noticed a taxi cab travelling at a high rate of speed facing the wrong direction of traffic as it travelled southbound in a northbound lane, in the 3400 block of Second Avenue West.

After attempts to stop the car failed, the driver of the taxi collided with the police cruiser, which made both vehicles inoperable.

Mudry said the man fled the vehicle on foot and was in possession of a knife. After not complying with the pursuing officer, the suspect was subdued with a Taser before he was taken into custody.

Officers concluded the cab was stolen minutes before they first observed it. Both the officer and the suspect were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A 42-year-old Prince Albert man faces several charges including theft of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for a police officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and possession of a dangerous weapon.

Mudry said the investigation remains ongoing.

Earlier today, Family Taxi told paNOW the driver’s vehicle was stolen while he left the car running outside of Tim Hortons.
