Saskatchewan government back to work May 17

Saskatchewan politicians get back to the legislature Tuesday, May 17, 2016.

That is when we will learn more about the government’s agenda for the upcoming year when the speech from the throne is unveiled that afternoon.

Expected legislation includes the privatization of several liquor stores across the province, plans which were unveiled in November 2015 and formed part of the Saskatchewan’s Party platform this election.

“We want to keep the election promise that was made with respect to liquor retailing in the province,” Premier Brad Wall told reporters Wednesday.

Typically, the spring session is over by the May long weekend, but with the provincial election moved to accommodate the federal vote, the dates are out of sync.

Wall expects there could be some long nights or extended time in order to get everything done.

“It could be we are sitting into July or we are sitting lots of night; that will be, I guess, the subject of negotiations and we will want to work together with the opposition on that,” Wall explained.

Both the speech from the throne and the budget must have a number of days allotted to it for debate.

Another big event happening before the legislative session starts is the building itself. The dome has been undergoing work and has been wrapped up for two years.

The restored dome will be unveiled at an event Monday, May 16.
