Flooding stirs up frustration in the RM of Buckland

Apr 20, 2011 | 6:57 AM

In the Rural Municipality of Buckland, tensions are rising almost as fast as the water levels.

A manmade lake development, built to handle the spring runoff, is now overflowing.

There is no outlet and the water is coming up on peoples' properties.

“It's backing up our water right up to the house. I've just kinda been pumping around the yard just to keep it away from the house,” said nearby resident, Darren Boyer.

Boyer and some other homeowners have filed complaints to the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority, but Boyer said he is getting impatient.

“The rural municipality has basically said it's in the hands of the Sask. Watershed Authority and the Sask. Watershed Authority is saying they're in the process of doing an engineering report in consultation with the rural municipality. So pretty much it's just a run around and nothing is getting done,” said Boyer.

A spokesperson for the Watershed Authority said some of their team members will travel to the rural municipality on today, to try and help resolve the process.

If an initial solution is not accepted, there is a formal complaint step, said Frank Fox, supervisor of operations for the Northwest Region

“The investigation gets taken to a whole other level. Determine is there fault here or if there is not. If we determine there is fault and a need to restore the site to its natural conditions, then we have the power under the act to issue an order to that effect.”

Fox said they should have a better idea by the day after the meeting which direction the investigation is going.
