Marquis Rd. set for major construction

Feb 13, 2016 | 7:07 AM

One of Prince Albert’s most travelled streets is about to get a major makeover.

City council approved recommendations during an executive committee meeting Monday, Feb. 12, to extend, widen and install water mains on Marquis Rd.

Beginning this year, a trunk water main would be constructed from the reservoir to the end of the road heading west and the road would be widened from Central Ave. to Fourth Ave E., city capital projects manager Wes Hicks said.

The road would then be extended at either end. This is expected to take until 2020.

“The first step would (be) to get to Sixth Ave. There is an existing street, so there is something to connect to,” Hicks said.

Coun. Ted Zurkowski suggested construction continue all the way the intersection of 10 Ave. W. and 28 St. W.

“As Coun. Zurakowski said, yes, the next logical thing is to continue on to tenth so that you have that loop; you have that access around the city such as they do in the east side of town when you get to fifteenth,” Hicks said.

The manager added the expansion to 10 Ave. W. would be contingent on development in the area.

While Zurakowski was pleased with the scope of road construction, he was concerned the city had responded too slowly.

“It seems to me that we have been reacting behind the times to development back there. Sask (Energy) went in there, the Rotary Trail went in there, this development is going in there…we’re losing control of what should have been done already,” he said.

Marquis Rd. E. was constructed from 6 Ave. E. to 15 Ave. E. between 1979 and 1980. It took almost 30 years before council discussed the possibility of extending the road to 6 Ave. W.
