Mardi Gras pancake breakfast benefits charities

Feb 9, 2016 | 11:15 AM

Community members flipped pancakes Tuesday for a good cause.

St. Mary High School and the Roman Catholic Diocese hosted a pancake breakfast on Feb. 9 to raise funds for diocesan charities.

Bishop Albert Thevenot said the day is a time to celebrate fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras) before preparing for lent, which starts tomorrow, Feb. 10.

“So, pancakes and sausage and all these different things, is just a way to get us together, to have a good time before we start the Lent season. It’s a time to celebrate life,” he said.

Breakfast cost five dollars a plate and the final tally will go directly to church charities.

“Proceeds for this celebration (are) going to go to the charities (and) to help a family that is in need,” Thevenot said.

Principal Mark Phaneuf, who was in attendance, said the event is a good way for the community to “take care of each other.”

“It’s always important to not only support our diocese, but (also) their efforts to make sure that we are having a social conscience, really,” he said.

Louis Hradeki, office and programs manager for the diocese and organizer of the event, said the event is also a good way for community members to interact with students.

“We enjoy doing it at school, students have a chance to eat some pancakes, and also the community at large can come out and kind of mingle with the students. It makes for a nice morning and we just enjoy doing that every now and then,” he said.

Marlene Yungwirth, who attended the breakfast, said it was “excellent,” with a smile on her face. She was one of many satisfied attendees.

The church will be hosting a Mardi Gras party/dinner at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Tickets are $10 per person and $25 per family.
