Man charged with murder, pleads guilty to manslaughter

Feb 4, 2016 | 4:44 PM

A Prince Albert man originally charged with second degree murder in the death of Cory Brown has pled guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

42 year-old Trevor Cook appeared this morning, Feb. 4, at Prince Albert Court of Queen’s Bench. The victim’s brother, Curtis Brown, disagrees with the downgraded offence.

“It’s five wounds to the stomach, right to the abdomen area…When a person does that, they don’t mean to harm a person; they mean to kill them,” Brown said.

Brown said the family contacted the Crown, inquiring why Cook pled guilty to manslaughter and not murder. He said they were told part of it had to do with the strength of the witnesses.

The family has been left wondering if the result would have been different had the police department followed up on some of the information they provided.

“I’m not saying they completely dropped the ball on that but we raised quite a few questions that peaked the Crown’s interest,” Brown said.

Cory Brown, 43, was found dead Sept. 6, 2014 at a residence in the 1100 block of 14th St. W.

Sentencing will take place April 18 at Prince Albert Court of Queen’s Bench. Unlike a murder charge, manslaughter does not carry an automatic life sentence. This remains, however, an option for the court.
