Silvernagle beats Anderson; Scotties Draw 2 wrap

Jan 27, 2016 | 9:37 PM

North Battleford’s Robyn Silvernagle played the spoiler in Day 1 of the 2016 Viterra Scotties Tournament of Hearts Women’s Championship Wednesday at the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Club.

Silvernagle beat Saskatoon Nutana’s Sherry Anderson 6-5, who’s originally from Prince Albert and is in the P.A. Sports Hall of Fame. Anderson had her own cheering section in the corner beside Ice 4 who applauded her team’s shots throughout the match.

The Silvernagle rink has P.A. connections of its own, as lead Kara Kilden hails from Prince Albert.

The match was tied at 2-2 before Anderson took the lead in the sixth with a deuce. Silvernagle responded with a two-ender of her own in the seventh, and a steal of two in the eighth to take a 6-4 lead. Anderson scored one in the ninth but it wasn’t enough to equalize.

The top-ranked Stefanie Lawton, who was born in Prince Albert and grew up near Shellbrook, scored the most points in the opening day with a 9-5 win over Kronau’s Kim Schneider.  Lawton had three multi-point ends in the game, including a three-ender in the 10th to seal the game.

Regina’s Michelle Englot scored three in the final end to win 7-4 over Moose Jaw’s Penny Barker and Regina’s Jolene Campbell held on to beat Regina’s Kristie Moore 6-5.

Thursday will feature draws at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Anderson’s only match on Thursday is in the 2 p.m. draw against Kelsey Dutton from Swift Current (1-0).
