Election looming for Peter Ballantyne

Apr 14, 2011 | 6:39 AM

A First Nation that was gripped by controversy last month, has headed to the polls.

Band members belonging to the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation will vote for their chief and council today.

Advanced polls are wrapped up Apr. 7.

In addition to Chief, there are 14 council seats up for grabs.

Incumbent Chief Darrell McCallum is being challenged by Joan Beatty, Richard Highway, Harold Linklater, and Roland Nataways.

Polls are open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

In March, some band members expressed concern following a report from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation that showed how much the Chief and Council were making.

Here is a list of places where you can go to vote:
1) Pelican Narrows – high school gym
2) Southend – Opawikoscikan gym
3) Sandy Bay – Village Hall
4) Deschambault Lake – Kimoosom Pwatinak Gymnasium
5) Denare Beach – DenarePlex
6) Sturgeon Landing – School
7) Prince Albert – PAGC main boardroom
