Operation Red Nose in search of more volunteers for New Year’s Eve

Dec 30, 2015 | 5:36 AM

Prince Albert’s Chapter of Operation Red Nose, which officially began giving safe rides home in the city in November, is preparing for an anticipated busy evening on Thursday.

James Wilm, chairman of the Operation Red Nose project said they have had a great turn out of volunteers so far, but they can always use more.  He said they are hoping to have at least seven or eight teams of volunteers ready to go for New Year’s.

“We really need to put our emphasis on New Year’s Eve and to try to recruit as many volunteers as we can because we know it is going to be a busy night,” he said.

Wilm said they have given approximately 200 safe rides home so far this season and he anticipates they will give over 50 more on Thursday. He said every year the need for Operation Red Nose in the city continues to grow as it becomes more well-known.

“We have had an exceptional year as far as the response to it so far,” he said.

Anyone that is interested in volunteering this Thursday as either a driver or a navigator can call the local Operation Red Nose number at 306-763-6673, or contact Suzanne Bantle at 306-764-3246 or Jim Wilm at 306-764-3632.

“There certainly is time yet if anyone is interested to give us a call and we will certainly make the effort to put you on the team,” said Wilm.

Operation Red Nose is a national road safety campaign aimed at reducing impaired driving during the holiday season. After a night out callers can contact volunteers with Operation Red Nose on designated evenings for a safe ride home.

Anyone requiring a safe ride home on New Year’s Eve is encouraged to give Operation Red Nose a call at 306-763-6673.

The service is free but donations are accepted. All funds raised from Operation Red Nose will go towards   youth programs in the city.
