NDP Cam Broten reflects on 2015, discusses 2016

Dec 28, 2015 | 7:16 AM

Opposition NDP Leader Cam Broten said they’ll be working hard at focusing on the things that matter most to the families of Saskatchewan, and the families of Prince Albert in 2016.

He said Prince Albert had a tough ride in 2015.

“They have really been kicked around and ignored by this government time and time again,” he said.

“You have two Sask party MLA’s, one who is still serving who doesn’t say a whole lot about the needs of the city when it comes to speaking up in the legislature or to her Caucus, and then the other one quit. It’s no surprise that we see we see things like big layoffs for health care workers or we see the needs for a second bridge ignored.

“Example after example P.A.’s needs have not really been addressed by this government, and I think they need some representation that will do that.”

Broten said the NDP’s strategy for the upcoming election in April involves focusing on things like health care and getting a second a bridge in Prince Albert.

“Having the best possible health care for families when they need it so that ER’s and hospitals are not over crowded, so that there is enough people there to help our loved ones in care homes. Having good strong classrooms for our kids that are not overcrowded and having enough teachers and educational assistants,” he said.

“And then having a cost of living that really works for working families that is reasonable and making sure we have good management of our Crown,” he added.

When it comes to a second bridge Broten doesn’t agree with the P3 approach.

“The government’s approach of dangling and forcing the city to go into a P3 arrangement, which will actually cost more over the long run, that’s not the way you do it,” he said. “You do it by being an honest broker and a sincere partner with the city and that’s what needs to happen with the creation of a second bridge.”

Broten said they want to make sure Prince Albert’s voice is heard.

“These issues absolutely matter, and that is what we are zeroed in on. We’ve got two great candidates- Nicole Rancourt and Shayne Lazarowich. They’re working hard out on the doorsteps and listening to people and bringing those concerns forward. I know they will be strong voices and good MLA’s for the people of PA.”
