Coleman claws out career game as Raiders roll past Red Deer

Dec 6, 2015 | 9:58 PM

Luke Coleman scored his first and only goal in a 14-game WHL audition last year as a 16-year-old in front of family and friends in Red Deer.

The Red Deer native struck again at the Enmax Centrium with family and friends in the stands. The emerging power forward scored the winning goal late in the third period and assisted on the other two Raider goals in a 3-1 win over the Rebels.

Coleman scooped a low backhander just inside the post while being knocked down after an end to end rush by Kolten Olynyk. The goal, Coleman’s 9th of the season at 15:25 which snapped a 1-1 tie came moments after a scoring chance by the Rebels. Coleman then combined with Tim Vanstone to force a turnover behind the net by Rebels goalie Rylan Toth, tippng the puck into the crease where Vanstone battled to backhand his 3rd goal of the season with Toth trying to scramble back into position.

The Raiders trailled 1-0 until 15:09 of the second period when Brendan Guhle powered a pro-like slapshot from the mid-point into the top corner on a Prince Albert power play. Coleman drew an assist on the Guhle goal, his 3rd of the season.

Rylan Parenteau turned in a second straight stellar performance as the only shot that beat him was a point blank blast by Brandon Hagel early in the first period. The 19-year-old from Saskatoon made his best and most important save late in the second period when the game was tied. Parenteau stretched while doing the splits and snagged an Adam Musil shot with his trapper and made a pad save on Haydn Fluery moments later to silence the storm during a Rebel flurry.

Ironically the only period in which the Raiders were outshot (11-10) was the third when the Prince Albert pack put the game away with two late and unanswered goals. The final shots on goal were 33-28 Raiders who went 1-5 on the power play and killed off all three Rebel opportunities. The Raiders have now killed ten straight opposition power plays.

Assistant coach Kelly Guard told the 900 CKBI post game show audience the enitre team is thrilled for Coleman because of his work ethic. He said Coleman is the first on the ice for practice and the last off the ice.

The Rebels pressured the Raiders in the early going but the momentum turned around with Prince Albert’s first power play. They generated several scoring chances and appeared to gain confidence for the rest of the game.

The win gives the Raiders a 3-1 record on this five game road swing which wraps up Tuesday night in Edmonton.

The victory also moves the Raiders back into the eastern conference lead, one point ahead of the Rebels and Lethbridge, as well as a two point advantage over the second place Brandon Wheat Kings in the eastern division.
