Local contest to benefit Prince Albert SPCA

Nov 29, 2015 | 7:28 AM

The Prince Albert SPCA is ready for their next fundraiser.

Every year the SPCA puts out a calendar, and this year their doing something different.

Through the GoGo Photo Contest website, the SPCA is putting on the Best Friends Calendar Contest.

John Morash, executive director at the SPCA, said their goal is to raise $5,000 through the contest, which will go towards the continued care of the animals at the shelter.

“The way the contest works is people can go online … you can submit a photo of your pet,” he explained.

He said the photo doesn’t have to be a pet who was adopted from the SPCA.

People can submit their photos from now until Dec. 10. Voting takes place from Dec. 10 to Dec. 20.

Morash said it’s $25 to enter a photo, but that also gets you a calendar as well.

“What happens when you’re entered, the first place winner will receive a $50 gift certificate from Pet Planet and also gets on the cover of the calendar.”

He said there will be 12 second place winners who will be featured as one of the months as well as a small gift.

The photo you submit to the website to be voted on will be the photo that will go into the calendar.

All you have to do is submit the photo and get your friends and family to vote for it.

“The other neat thing is you can reserve a day in your honor. So for $10 you can just go on [the website] and reserve a day if it’s your pets birthday, your birthday or do it for someone else.”

He said once a day has been purchased it can’t be bought again.

“We’re expecting to see a lot of really cute pictures. We have a lot of great photographers in the community and a lot of beautiful animals and pets,” Morash said.

“Our engagement on social media, people posting photos, in the last year we’ve gone from 4000 people that would check out our Facebook site regularly to 7000. We’ve almost doubled in a year.”

He said the level of engagement of pet photos on social media is what lead the SPCA to try this as a calendar option this year.

“We’ve done a calendar every year but primarily the calendars in the past have all been templated calendars that we sell as a fundraiser, but they’re not local animals. But this will allow [local people to be engaged] and see their own cat or dog on the calendar.”

He said the SPCA continues to be thankful for all the support they receive on a daily basis from the community.
