City of Prince Albert reviewing intersections

Nov 24, 2015 | 4:16 PM

A big change is coming to the intersection of 2nd Ave. W. and 15th St. next week.

A new double left turning lane will be installed as scheduled on Dec. 1. The City believes this will improve traffic at the intersection, particularly during rush hour.

This traffic improvement measure will be the first of its kind in the city but not likely the last.

“There have been discussions in administration and in council of the possibility of doing a similar double turning lane at 6th Avenue East and 15th Street,” said City projects manager Wes Hicks.

Next year, the City is planning on having a traffic study done, which would look at all the intersections in the city and make recommendations regarding possible improvements that need to be made.

Hicks said traffic numbers have been steadily rising in the Prince Albert over the past few years.

“On our website we do have our 2014 traffic volume map and it shows that on 2nd Avenue West and 15th Street, traffic volumes are nearing 25,000 vehicles per day,” he said.

In comparison, the map shows the intersection at 6th Ave. E. and 15th St. sees close to 26,000 vehicles per day and the intersection at 28th street and 2nd Ave. W. sees about 23,000 vehicles per day.

Hicks also recognized there has been quite a few accidents near 5th Ave. E. and Marquis Drive, but added the solution is a bit tricky.

“That is a difficult intersection because it is a T-intersection and it’s so close to 6th Avenue and it’s also close to another T-intersection,” he said

The City is currently collecting traffic data for 2015.

Hicks said he expected the updated traffic-volume map on the city’s website by January.
