Conservative hold on Saskatchewan could be diluted this election

Oct 9, 2015 | 12:05 PM

The Conservatives, NDP and Liberals are all still in contention to win seats in Saskatoon and Regina, but in the rural areas, the Conservatives are leading, according to a new poll by Mainstreet/Postmedia out ahead of Thanksgiving weekend.

Regina has a close race. The Conservatives are registering with 29 per cent of decided voters, the NDP are at 24 per cent and the Liberals are at 23 per cent.  Among those surveyed, there is still 19 per cent who are undecided in Regina.

In Saskatoon, the NDP is leading with 31 per cent of decided voters while the Conservatives come up with 28 per cent and the Liberals are at 21 per cent. Saskatoon has about 21 per cent still undecided.

In this province’s rural areas, the Conservatives are leading the NDP with 37 per cent of voters saying they’ll get their support compared to 20 per cent for the NDP. The Liberals have 15 per cent of voters.

Those behind this poll – Mainstreet/Postmedia – believe electoral redistribution could impact the outcome of this election in Saskatchewan. Every ten years, the number of ridings and their boundaries are modified according to the most recent population figures in the census.

The survey was done on Tuesday through calls to landlines and cell phones. Mainstreet surveyed 2, 853 Saskatchewan residents. Its margin of error is +/- 1.83, 19 times out of 20. In Regina, it’s +/-3.19 per cent. In Saskatoon, it’s +/-2.96 per cent and in the rest of the province, it is +/-3 per cent; 19 times out of 20.
