Central Sask. First Nation going drug and alcohol free

Oct 2, 2015 | 4:54 PM

Red Earth Cree Nation has passed a new law prohibiting drugs and alcohol on the reserve.

The law, passed by the band council, is in response to a number of drug and alcohol related deaths on the reserve.

To date, the community has lost 24 band members from suicides, murder, highway accidents and drownings related to the substances.

“(Community members) said they don’t want the law tomorrow because they’ve lost so many. They want it now,” explained Councilor Charlene Head in a press release. “The youth told us, ‘Yes we’re in trouble and we need to do something else, other than what we’re doing now.’”
