Travel Club rounding up students for a 5th trip to Greece

The Prince Albert Youth Travel Club is getting another group of students together to jet off to Greece next year.

Brianna Watson, a grade 11 student at St. Mary High School, is looking forward to signing up.

“Ever since I was little I’ve always wanted to go to Greece,” said Watson. “Just reading about all the myths and everything Greece has to offer. It’s always been one of my [dream] places.”

She’s already anticipating certain parts of the trip.

“That cruise to Santorini, and then going to Apollo and Athena, their little temples,” she said.

Watson said she was drawn to Travel Club, expecting it to be a different experience than travelling alone or with family.

“If I were to go on my own, I wouldn’t know where to go and what to do, whereas travel club, they’ve been there before and they know where to go and what places would be best,” said Watson.

Kendall Schneider, who’s also in grade 11 at St. Mary, is planning on going to Greece next spring as well.

“I’ve been to a part of Europe before and I love travelling and I’ve always wanted to go to Greece for the culture and the history behind it,” said Schneider. “It would be cool to get to go with high school friends.”

Scheider said she’s heard many stories from people who have been on trips with the Travel Club, making her want to sign up in the first place.

“You hear about it everywhere, the school is buzzing about it and I’m always looking at their Facebook page,” she said.

Scheider, who says she’s looking forward to learning about Olympic history, already has a plan.

“I hope to be able to fundraise a little bit and then hopefully my parents will help me,” she said.

Donna Delziel founded the Travel Club over 20 years ago and is proud of what they’ve done in those years.

“It offers them the opportunity to see the world,” she said. “We are there to help the kids, but they learn to be independent travellers.

“When we come back from any trip, any of the students could travel anywhere on their own, and that’s our goal.”

Their trip to Greece next Easter will be their fifth time there.

“That tells you the value, I think, of the Greece trip,” said Dalziel.

This time around, the trip will include a seven-day cruise, a new and happily welcomed addition.

An informational meeting for students and parents will be held at 8 p.m. Monday Sept. 28th at Messiah Lutheran Church.

To register for the trip, the down payment is $199 and trip payments from then on are approximately $260 a month.

Dalziel also said she expresses major gratitude to Canadian Tire for allowing Travel Club kids to fundraise on their property.

“Hundreds of kids have been able to travel because of Malcom [Jenkins] and Canadian Tire, and really, thank you P.A.,” she said.
