Music, food and family fun at this year’s Tapestrama

Sep 25, 2015 | 12:21 PM

This year is the beginning of something new for Prince Albert’s Tapestrama Festival.

After spending the last few years at the E.A. Rawlinson Center, the two-day cultural festival is moving to the Plaza 88 Event Centre—the former Co-op building, downtown.

It will run on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. and will feature everything from salsa and Latin dancers, Cree dancers, martial arts demonstrations and Metis fiddle, to name a few.

Shayne Lazarowich, executive director of the Prince Albert Multicultural Council (PAMC), said over the last few years, they’ve seen close to 2,000 people attend Tapestrama. This year, they’re aiming to exceed that number.

Admission to Tapestrama is by donation, which Lazarowich hopes will make it easier for large families to attend the festival.

“There will be children’s activities as well as what’s on stage. It’s really family friendly, we look forward to a really good celebration this year.”

There will be lots of free parking at Plaza 88 throughout the weekend, making it very accessible for families.

Another exciting aspect is the various traditional foods up for grabs. Lazarowich said there will be vendors reflecting Filipino, Chinese, First Nations and German culture.

“Lots of different vendors…People can enjoy food from all around the world,” said Lazarowich.

For many years, Tapestrama was held at the Prince Albert Exhibition Centre, before they moved the event to the E.A. Rawlinson Center, both of which Lazarowich said were successful venues.

“We’d like to freshen things up and try another venue,” said Lazarowich. “(There will be) lots of tables, lots of seating, a nice big stage, professional lighting, sound, it’ll be great.”

The event will be a unique opportunity for the community to check out Plaza 88 since it was transitioned over from the old Co-op. The event will be set up in the “King’s Court”, the venue’s main ballroom with a capacity of over 300.

There is also a line up of top-notch performers throughout the weekend, including Prince Albert’s own Donny Parenteau.

“Donny will be playing on Sunday night at about 6 p.m.,” said Lazarowich. “He’ll be followed by the Andino Suns, they were here for the Borealis Music Festival…They’re great and a lot of fun.”

On Saturday night, Dallas and Phil Boyer, a well-known Metis fiddle group, will perform. They’ll be followed by a local blues band called Cold Shot.

Something unique on Saturday night will be a Salsa Dance Party at 8 p.m.

“We did it once last year and it was really good,” said Lazarowich. “We’re cooperating this year with Prince Albert Salsa, a local group that does weekly salsa classes and lessons, they’re participating as well.

“So we’ll have some lessons for people that have never done dance before.”

The dance will feature performances by the Saskatoon Salsa Dance Company, Concrete Mentality, Orlando Martinez and Fiesta Cubana Dance Company, which will be followed by the dance party.

The dance will be held at the Prince Albert Union Center at 107-8th St. E, right across from Plaza 88. .

Tickets for the Salsa are only $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Advanced tickets can be purchased from the PAMC, at 1410C Central Avenue, or can be purchased at Funky Fresh Bistro, at 810 Central Avenue.

Funky Fresh Bistro will also be catering the dance.
